"Don't plant frost sensitive plants until after Memorial Day." I've been gardening here off and on for over 20 years, and I know this rule, and yet I like to push my luck.

We had a freeze warning last night. I had potatoes up, so we covered half of them with grass clippings and half with a tarp. The half with the grass clippings (first photo) did much better, but I think most will survive. I probably won't plant so many potatoes again so soon. I'll only do a few rows to have early potatoes.

I also planted my peppers out a week or so ago. They were getting so large (I started them too early), and I had to get them in the ground. They were under a plastic hoop tunnel, but I think I lost them all.

I probably went overboard with pepper plants since I had 36 pepper plants and four different varieties- New Ace, Violet Sparkle, Mini Bell, and Cayenne. I guess I will need to take a trip to a local greenhouse and buy my pepper plants this year. The only bright spot that I can find is that I won't buy that many, so I will have room for other things.

It was already 33 when we went to bed, and 26 in the morning, so I think the prolonged cold weather is what did it.

Do you have any experience with mixing different age chicks? I was nervous about mixing our two-day-old Whiting True Blue chicks with our one week and two-day-old Welsummers. They did great, though, and are getting along well.

BTW, I love the variety in the Whiting chicks. They're so adorable.

Do you name your chickens? Share your favorite names with us. We have a bunch more to name.

My daughter loves naming things. She even names the eggs in the incubator if we can tell them apart.

(As you can tell from the audio, she named one Gertrude McFuzz, as well.)

Just some cute sleeping chicks...

We're really enjoying having baby chicks. It was the first time ordering chicks by mail. They arrived healthy and eager to eat.

I like using this heatplate from @incubator_warehouse in the brooder. The chicks usually sleep around the edges with their heads sticking out. When they do pile up in the middle, we can still watch them, and I know they're getting plenty of oxygen.

I was paging through my son's math notebook the other day and was amazed (swipe to end). This is the child who had such a hard time writing when he was little that I wrote the answers for him in his math workbook. He hated to write. I didn't want him to hate math, too. Somewhere over the years, that changed, and writing is no longer an issue for him.

Parents, kids don't mature in every area at an equal rate. That's why putting them in a classroom and expecting them all to do the same thing at the same time doesn't always work out that well.

As our kids' parents, we know them best. It's okay to tailor their education to where they're at. It's okay if they aren't on the same page as everyone else. You can teach your children the way they learn. You can focus on their strengths instead of on their weaknesses.
