As I’ve been researching books to include in my nature studies, I’ve come across several beautiful picture book hymns. I decided to bring them all together in one place and add other ones that I’ve found along the way.
All of these books contain the full text of the hymns. A few also contain the story behind the hymn. In most of these, the words to the hymn are the main focus of the book and that was the goal for the post.
Morning Has Broken was my initial inspiration for the post. I love the beautiful illustrations that bring the words to life. Christina’s Carol is my latest find and especially meaningful to me because I’ve been pondering the words of the song “In the Bleak Midwinter” lately. I was excited to see this poem by Christina Rosetti beautifully illustrated by Tomie dePaola.
“Our God, heaven cannot hold Him
Nor earth sustain,
Heaven and earth shall flee away
When He comes to reign:
In the bleak mid-winter
A stable-place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty —
Jesus Christ.”
I hope you enjoy this list of picture book hymns. They would make great gifts for a child or even an adult who loves hymns.
If I missed any picture books containing hymns that you love, feel free to let me know in the comments.
