Bigger Hearts for His Glory-Week 10

We had another really busy week here with getting our new online store up and running but we managed to get quite a bit done in school, too.

We learned more about Benjamin Franklin this week in Heart of Dakota’s Bigger Hearts for His Glory.  We read about his kite experiment and Kevin made a simple kite.  He learned about mixing colors as he painted a piece of paper in rainbow colors and then we cut it out into a kite shape.

We studied about different inventions Benjamin Franklin made.   Kevin was also supposed to make an invention, so he made a marble separator from these neat planks that separated light plastic marbles from heavier glass marbles.

The light marbles were lighter so they bounced onto a different ramp than the heavier marbles.

We also read about how Benjamin Franklin published Poor Richard’s Almanac and Kevin made a notebook page about some of his wise sayings.  He couldn’t think of anything to draw so I had to give him some ideas.

In Science, we started reading about John Audobon. We discussed the different ways birds fly and Kevin acted out the various ways. Then he added a page to his science notebook about the activity.

He also made a map showing the swallows migration route. Drawing is not his strong point, but I thought he did a good job on North America. It did take a him a long time to do, so I didn’t have him do the rest of the continents.  I was encouraged how much easier the writing is coming for him.  (I see a mistake or two I didn’t catch.)

That’s all for this week.  I really am looking forward to having all the start-up of our new store behind us and getting back into our regular schedule.  Thanks for reading!

    1. Hi Nikki,

First of all, I want to say congratulations on striving to raise your children for the Lord and for being dedicated in schooling them. It sounds like you have your hands full. 🙂 The good thing with HOD is that the younger guides really are easy to use (I hope you’re finding this is true 🙂 ).

Thank you so much for your kind comments about the blog. They really mean a lot to me. It was a challenge to write each week about Bigger so it’s good to hear that others find it helpful and encouraging.
