We came home from a 5- day trip last night, and one of the first things we did this morning was harvest the peas.

We planted two kinds of peas this year on the first warm day in March. This was probably a month too early, but we made a plastic tent over the fence and almost all of them germinated. I'm not sure we gained much from planting early, except the delight of working in the garden after a long winter.

The tall ones in the back are Sugar Snap and you can eat the pods. The shorter ones are a shell pea. We picked a bowl of each this morning. We all love fresh peas, so these are just for fresh eating.

I love seeing how much the garden has grown in just a little over two weeks!

We greatly expanded the garden this year, and it still filled up too fast.

Fresh greens and cilantro to go with $25,,000 Mexican dish for supper.

I'm looking forward to eating more from the garden as summer progresses, but for now I'm enjoying fresh cilantro at my doorstep.

I thought I'd share a little more about what I lea

I thought I'd share a little more about what I learned hatching quail.

1. When they first come out of the shell, they may look like they'll never walk well. They'll be curled up and you wonder if they'll ever be able to straighten their neck, and if they do, will it even support their head? Don't worry. It may take a few hours or even overnight, but for the most part, they'll be fine. All of mine were.

2. Curled toes is probably not something you need to worry about. Even the worst cases I had, straightened out on their own. If it makes you feel better, after you take them out of the incubator, you can gently stretch them, but ours cleared up overnight without me doing anything.

3. Like newborn babies they fall asleep without warning. They will fall over as dead with their feet sticking out oddly. Don't worry; they're just sleeping.

4. It's okay to help a stuck chick. I helped one after no progress overnight and another after several hours. I took a tweezer and carefully removed bits of shell (continuing on the path around the shell that they had started). Then I let them push it open by themselves. This is after they start unzipping the shell, not after they pip. It's usual for them to pip and then wait a day before emerging.

5. If you read a lot about raising quail, you'll think they're hard to keep alive. Maybe I'm lucky or prepared, but I haven't found it so. Of course, We haven’t had them long. I'm using a heatplate for heat in a brooder tent and it's working perfectly. They come out to eat and drink and go under the plate to keep warm.

6. Incubating is a bit addicting. I'm starting to wonder what I can hatch next. 😅

Watching our quail hatch out the last few days has been so much fun. We've spent more time than I care to admit around the incubator watching the eggs first start wiggling, seeing who can see the first pip, and then watching the little quail break out.

There are a few things I wasn't prepared for concerning incubating quail.

1. How very weird they look when they first hatch.
2. Their habit of literally falling asleep in the middle of any activity and looking completely dead as they take a short nap.

Now for the really fun part...enjoying these little fluff balls.

I'm grateful to @incubator_warehouse for their gift of the IncuView incubator and the great hatching experience we were able to experience as a result.
